This is a problem which can affect around one person in twenty having foot or ankle surgery. Patients can experience burning pain, swelling and skin changes such as abnormal sweating. Sometimes these symptoms can be very severe and distressing. Treatment for this can involve injections, more surgery, taking pain medication and undergoing physiotherapy or psychotherapy. Whilst some patients symptoms improve over time around half of those who suffer CRPS are left with ongoing pain and symptoms.
